$6m plan deferred

KINGSTON Council has deferred its decision on a proposed landmark $6 million, three-storey Mordialloc development.

The future of the mixed-use project, which would replace existing buildings at 530-540 Main St, was to be decided at last Monday's council meeting.

But it will now be made after council officers decipher a belated VicRoads traffic report.

Objector Paul Nixon told the meeting that although the project was "amazing", residents were worried about its impact on the amenity of the area, because the only entry and exit point would be Epsom Rd.

"There are concerns about the traffic that will be generated as a result," Mr Nixon said.

Mordialloc Sporting Club secretary John Macnaughton said a shortfall of 97 car spaces would drive users of the development into the club's car park, forcing out members.

"We are effectively a not-for-profit club," Mr Macnaughton said. "We will have a substantial deficit on our profits."

Plans for the development, lodged by Taylors Development Strategists, include a 1005sq m Aldi supermarket, 10 shops, 39 residential units and a 168-space, underground car park.

Architect Les Finnis told the meeting the design met local and state planning requirements including those for car parking provisions.

"The design, we believe, provides an excellent built form and identity to the northern gateway and entrance to the activity centre of Mordialloc," Mr Finnis said.

But he said it would be appropriate to delay a decision until VicRoads' advice on vehicle access to the site was examined.

The council's decision is now expected at its July 28 meeting.
