MORE than 300 artists have thrown their hat in the ring for this year's Nillumbik Prize.
The winner of the $5000 arts prize will be announced this Friday at the exhibition's opening night.
Montsalvat chief executive Sigmund Jorgensen said there had been a "fantastic response" to what would be a "terrific" exhibition.
"The Nillumbik Prize grew out of the Eltham Prize and it would be one of the oldest in Victoria," Mr Jorgensen said. "I've attended it since the early 1950s and it continues to attract a range of established and emerging painters."
The 2008 competition is to be judged by painter Rick Amor, who has been exhibiting for nearly 40 years and is recognised as one of Australian's leading figurative artists.
There will also be a $1000 prize for the people's choice winner.
Heide Museum of Modern Art assistant curator Linda Short, artist Chris Pittard and Nillumbik Council art collection curator Delsha Rees have selected work from 64 artists to go on show at Montsalvat.
Among them are artists such as Hilary Jackman, Isobel Clement, Daniel Moynihan and Paul Eolo Bottar.
The exhibition runs from Friday, June 20, until Sunday, July 27, at 7 Hillcrest Ave, Eltham. Details: 9439 7712 or arts@montsalvat.com.au.
